Scalp Biology

Understanding why your scalp behaves the way it does — through follicle anatomy, microbiome science, sebum regulation, and the specific environmental pressures of the Malaysian climate.

Quick Reference

Follicle Anatomy & Hair Cycle

Anagen

2–7 years · 85–90% of scalp hairs

Active growth phase. Follicle dermal papilla divides rapidly, producing hair shaft. GH, IGF-1, and Wnt signalling drive this phase.

Catagen

2–3 weeks · 1–2% of scalp hairs

Regression phase. Follicle detaches from dermal papilla. Hair growth stops. Triggered by cortisol, DHT, and inflammatory cytokines.

Telogen

3–4 months · 10–15% of scalp hairs

Resting phase. Hair remains anchored but no growth occurs. Ends when new anagen hair pushes the telogen hair out. Stress extends this phase.
