5D Hyaluronic Acid

A 5-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid system that targets all five scalp tissue layers simultaneously — the structural advance over standard single-weight HA.

HOW IT WORKS

5D Hyaluronic Acid uses five distinct molecular weights of hyaluronic acid — ranging from super-large (10,000+ kDa) to ultra-micro (< 10 kDa) — each sized to penetrate a specific tissue layer of the scalp. Standard hyaluronic acid formulations use a single molecular weight, limiting penetration to the uppermost 1–2 epidermal layers. The 5D system builds a moisture gradient across all five layers from epidermis to dermal tissue, providing true multi-level hydration.

THE SCIENCE

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan — a long-chain polysaccharide capable of binding up to 1,000× its own weight in water. It is a natural component of the dermis and a key structural element of the extracellular matrix surrounding hair follicles. As we age, or under conditions of chronic dehydration, pollution, or hormonal disruption, dermal HA concentrations decline — reducing the moisture-retaining capacity of the scalp tissue that surrounds follicle bulbs.

The primary limitation of conventional hyaluronic acid in scalp care is molecular size. High-molecular-weight HA (> 1,000 kDa) forms a film on the stratum corneum surface — effective for surface moisture retention but unable to penetrate to the dermis where follicle bulbs reside. Low-molecular-weight HA (< 50 kDa) penetrates deeper but provides no surface protection.

The 5D Hyaluronic Acid system resolves this by deploying five size categories simultaneously:

Super-large molecule (10,000+ kDa): Locks surface moisture, prevents transepidermal water loss from the outer stratum corneum.

Large molecule (1,000–3,000 kDa): Hydrates the upper epidermis surface, forms a protective film.

Medium molecule (200–500 kDa): Penetrates to the mid-epidermal layer, providing structural hydration to keratinocytes.

Small molecule (50–100 kDa): Reaches the deep epidermis and upper dermis, where it integrates with the dermal extracellular matrix.

Ultra-micro molecule (< 10 kDa): Penetrates to the deep dermis and the environment immediately surrounding the follicle bulb and dermal papilla — delivering true cellular-level hydration where it can directly support follicle function.

The analogy used in professional training for this ingredient is a "scalp hyaluronic acid ocean" — rather than a surface pool, the 5D system saturates every depth layer, so the entire scalp tissue is hydrated rather than just its surface. This is particularly relevant for thinning hair: the dermal papilla's ability to signal follicle growth requires an adequate extracellular matrix hydration environment.

For Malaysian scalps dealing with air-conditioning dehydration (most KL office workers spend 8+ hours in air-conditioned environments), the deep-layer HA deficit is a specific contributor to scalp tightness, increased shedding, and premature follicle miniaturisation.

KEY FACTS

5 distinct molecular weights: super-large → large → medium → small → ultra-micro

Each size targets a specific scalp tissue depth — from stratum corneum to deep dermis

Standard HA formulations penetrate 1–2 layers; 5D system covers all 5

Ultra-micro molecules reach the dermal papilla environment directly

Relevant for air-conditioning dehydration — a specific KL lifestyle factor

EDITORIAL NOTE — WHERE TO FIND THIS IN MALAYSIA

TTE Elephant Head Spa uses 5D Hyaluronic Acid ampoule products within their Bonding (hydration-repair) treatment protocol. It is applied following AI trichoscopy assessment identifying dermal dehydration as a contributing factor to scalp condition.
