Male & Female Pattern Baldness in Malaysia: Causes & What to Do

Androgenetic alopecia — commonly known as pattern baldness — is the most common form of hair loss, affecting approximately 50% of Malaysian men by age 50 and 25% of women after menopause. It is driven by genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone that shrinks hair follicles over time.
In men, hair loss typically starts at the temples and crown, following the Norwood scale progression. In women, thinning is more diffuse, mainly on the top of the head with the hairline usually intact (Ludwig scale pattern).
What can be done: Minoxidil (topical, OTC) is proven to slow loss and stimulate regrowth but requires continuous use. Finasteride (oral, prescription for men only) blocks DHT production. Head spa treatments increase blood flow to miniaturised follicles and complement medical treatment. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is available at our studio and stimulates follicle metabolism.
TTE Headspa treatments do not replace medical therapy for androgenetic alopecia but are highly effective as a complementary approach to maintain scalp health and maximise follicle survival.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is pattern baldness hereditary?
Yes. Androgenetic alopecia is strongly genetic and can be inherited from either parent. Having a bald father or maternal grandfather significantly increases your risk.
At what age does pattern baldness start in Malaysia?
Pattern baldness can begin as early as the late teens or early 20s in men with strong genetic predisposition. In women it more commonly starts after menopause, though it can occur earlier.
Does minoxidil work for Asians?
Yes. Clinical studies in Asian populations show minoxidil is effective, though some individuals may need the 5% formulation. Results typically appear after 4–6 months of consistent use.
Can I stop androgenetic hair loss naturally?
Natural approaches (scalp massage, nutrition, stress reduction) can slow progression but cannot stop genetic hair loss entirely. Medical treatment combined with scalp therapy gives the best long-term outcome.
Is hair transplant the only permanent solution?
Hair transplant is the only permanent restoration option, but it is not suitable for everyone and requires stable hair loss first. Medical therapy and head spa maintenance can preserve existing hair for many years before transplant is needed.
