Dry Scalp: Causes, Symptoms & How to Treat It in Malaysia

By: Peng Yu Yan

Dry scalp occurs when the scalp doesn't produce enough moisture — resulting in tightness, itching, and small white flakes that fall from hair with movement. Despite Malaysia's humid climate, dry scalp is surprisingly common due to overcleansing, harsh shampoos, and air-conditioned environments.

Dry scalp vs. dandruff: Dry scalp flakes are small, white, and dry. Dandruff flakes are larger, yellowish, and greasy. Dry scalp is often accompanied by dry skin elsewhere on the body.

Common causes in Malaysia include washing hair too frequently with sulphate-heavy shampoos, long hours in air-conditioned offices, chlorine from swimming pools, nutritional deficiencies (omega-3, vitamin E), and washing with hot water.

Treatment approach at TTE Headspa: We use a hydrating scalp mask with hyaluronic acid and ceramide complex, followed by a warm oil infusion treatment to restore the scalp lipid barrier. Clients are advised to switch to sulphate-free shampoos and wash with lukewarm water only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a dry scalp and oily hair at the same time?

Yes. The scalp produces more oil to compensate for dryness while the skin itself remains dehydrated. This is called dry scalp with seborrhoea.

How often should I wash my hair if I have a dry scalp?

Wash 2–3 times per week maximum using a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo with lukewarm water. Over-washing strips the scalp of its natural oils.

Does air conditioning in Malaysia cause dry scalp?

Yes. Air conditioning reduces ambient humidity which draws moisture from the scalp. Spending long hours in AC environments is a leading cause of dry scalp in Malaysia.

What home remedies work for dry scalp?

Aloe vera gel applied to the scalp 30 minutes before washing, a few drops of jojoba or argan oil massaged in, and drinking more water all help restore scalp moisture.

Which shampoo ingredients should I avoid for dry scalp?

Avoid sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), sodium laureth sulphate (SLES), parabens, and alcohol-based ingredients. Look for shampoos with ceramides, glycerin, or panthenol.
